PURPOSE:To perform such grinding operation as suitable to the status quo as well as to reduce the extent of machining manhours by measuring the surface irregularities of a grinding subject, recognizing a ground form on the basis of this measurement, and installing such a means as selecting a corresponding pattern out of machining patterns preset on the basis of this recognition. CONSTITUTION:A grinding unit is provided with a work arm 3, a distance sensor 7 measuring the surface form of a workpiece 5, and an electronic controller 10 inputting information of this sensor and controlling the work arm 3. This electronic controller 10 is constituted as an arithmetic-logic operation circuit of a central processing unit 11 or the like, and it is provided with an SIO 16 communicating with a host computer 15 issuing design information, an input port 17 inputting data out of the distance sensor 7 and a drive circuit 20 controlling the work arm 3. A central processing unit CPU 11 inputs data from the distance sensor 7 and the host computer 15, recognizes the surface form of a workpiece, thereby selecting a corresponding pattern from the patterns preset with this recognition. On the basis of this selection, the work arm 3 is controlled and driven by the drive circuit 20.
