Summary:PURPOSE:To improve liquid crystal characteristics by approximately paralleling and reversing the orientation treating directions of the orientation control films respectively provided on the inside surfaces of two sheets of substrates and incorporating a specific carboxylic acid ester compd. into a liquid crystal material. CONSTITUTION:The orientation control films are provided respectively on the inside surfaces of two sheets of the substrates and the orientation treating directions of two sheets of these orientation control films are approximately parallel and reverse. In addition, the liquid crystal material contains the carboxylate compd. expressed by formula I. In the formula I, R denotes one kind of the group selected from 6 to 18C alkyl group, 6 to 18C alkoxy group, 6 to 18C halogenated alkyl group; (m) denotes 1 to 10 integer; C* denotes an asymmetric carbon atom. The liquid crystal characteristics are improved; for example, the contrast ratio of the liquid crystal element is increased, the operating temp. is lowered to about room temp., the width of the operating temp. is widened, the switching speed is increased, and electric power consumption is lessened.
