NEW MATERIAL:An alkanoic acid derivative shown by formula I [R is lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, naphthyl or group shown by formula IV (R is H, halogen, nitro, etc.; m is 0 or 1-2), 1-methylimidazolyl, 2-thiazolyl-2-yl or group shown by formula V (R is H, halogen, alkyl, etc.); R is H, hydroxyl group, alkoxy, cycloalkoxy, alkylthio, alkenyloxy, etc.; R and R are halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, H, etc.; Z is methine or N; X is O or S] and a salt thereof. EXAMPLE:Methyl 2(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)oxy-2-phenylthioacetate. USE:Useful as a herbicide in a paddy field, plowed field, nonagricultural land, etc., having high effects on annual and perennial weeds with a small amount of herbicide and high safety to rice plant, wheat, maize, etc. PREPARATION:For example, a compound shown by formula II is reacted with a compound shown by formula III in the presence of a base in a solvent to give a compound shown by formula I.
