Summary:PURPOSE:To improve luminance of an electroluminescent device so as to make clear images by dispersing a phosphor powder in a nonlinear optical material- containing organic binder for forming a light-emitting layer. CONSTITUTION:A dispersion-type electric field electroluminescent device 10 has an opaque or transparent back side electrode 11. An insulating layer 12 is formed on one side of the back side electrode 11 and a light-emitting layer 13 is formed on the surface of the insulating layer 12. The insulating layer 12 has a function of reflecting light which is emitting from the light-emitting layer 13 and in the case that the back side electrode 11 is transparent, the light is normally removed. A transparent electrode 14 is further formed on the light-emitting layer 13. The light-emitting layer 13 is formed by dispersing a phosphor powder 13A in an organic binder 13B. The organic binder is prepared by containing a nonlinear optical material. In this way, dielectric constant of the organic binder is improved and thus luminance is improved. When the resulting electroluminescent device is used as a back light for a liquid crystal display, the images become clear.
