Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the production efficiency of the subject material by granulating fine particles of pitch having an optically anisotropic structure, forming the granules to a desired shape and subjecting the formed article successively to carbonization treatment and graphitization treatment. CONSTITUTION:Fine particles of pitch having particle diameter of 1-500mum and fine optically anisotropic structure are formed to a desired shape by cold hydrostatic forming under 0.5-5T/cm . The formed article is carbonized by heating to about 1000-1200 deg.C at a heating rate of 0.01-5 deg.C/min and then heated to about 2000-2800 deg.C at a heating rate of 1-10 deg.C/min to obtain the objective isotropic carbon material.
