Summary:PURPOSE:To securely and automatically detect a tracking position by using the value of a tracking error signal at the pole of the sum of the quantity of reflected light as a tracking position. CONSTITUTION:A digitized reflected light quantity sum signal TSq is inputted to the phase shifter consisting of delay devices 403-406, multipliers 411-417 which have specific coefficients, and an adder 42 to obtain an output (TShq) which is shifted in phase by -90 deg.. Then the output TShq is inputted to a low-pass filter 43 to remove high frequency noises and then an output Un and an output Un-1 which is delayed by a delay device 407 are inputted to a computing element 45. Further, a digitized tracking error signal TEq is passed through delay devices 401-402 and a low-pass filter 44 and then an output Xn and an output xn-1 which is delayed by a delay device 408 are inputted to the computing element 45. The computing element 45 calculates (y) in an equation and outputs a tracking position signal.
