Summary:PURPOSE:To enable smooth switching from regenerative braking to resistive braking by detecting abrupt variation of chopper input voltage or output voltage of an inverter upon removal of a regenerative load and varying the control amount of the chopper according to the variation. CONSTITUTION:A time variation of filter capacitor voltage ECF is multiplied by a gain K1 through a differentiating element 1 to produce a value dECF/dt. A limit value C2 for preventing unnecessary function is then subtracted from dECF/dt to produce a value dECF'/dt. If thus obtained value is equal to or higher than 0, a conduction ratio command gamma2 is produced through a high priority element 2. A final conduction ratio command gammaP is then obtained through a low priority element 14 so that the sum gamma3 of conduction ratio commands gamma1 and gamma2 does not exceed a maximum limit value C2. By such arrangement, brake force can be produced stably without causing overvoltage.
