PURPOSE:To prepare the subject compound in a high yield, low cost and high purity by removing water from the reaction system prior to the reaction when a specific poly cyclic olefin is reacted with a carboxylic acid in the presence of an acidic catalyst to provide the objective compound. CONSTITUTION:When a compound of formula I [R -R are H, hydrocarbon group or halogen; R or R and R or R may form a ring; n is 0 or a positive integer (R -R may be different when repeated plural times)] is reacted with a carboxylic acid in the presence of an acidic catalyst to prepare a compound of formula II (X and X are H or at least one of them is COOR ) useful as a raw material for coating, as an intermediate for agricultural chemicals, etc., water is removed from the reaction system, e.g. by individually dehydrating the raw materials, carboxylic acids and catalyst, respectively, prior to the reac tion, thereby providing the objective compound in a high yield profitably while inhibiting the by-production of di polyclic alkyl ether caused by the raw materials with the water.
