Summary:PURPOSE:To facilitate the formation of a polymer/liquid crystal composite membrane being capable of low-voltage drive at low frequencies and having rapid response by removing electrolyte ions from a polymer membrane formed by electrolytic polymerization and impregnating the holes freed from the ions with a liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A solution 12 comprising a monomer material, an electrolyte and a solvent is put in a container 11 and a transparent conductive film 13 is put in the solution 12 while a counter electrode 16 is provided in opposition to the transparent conductive film 13. A constant-current D.C. electric source 17 is provided between the film 13 and the counter electrode 16 in such a position that the positive electrode of the source 17 is on the side of the film 13. A polymer film 19 is formed on the surface of the film 13 by electrolytic polymerization. After the solution 12 is replaced by an electrolyte solution 21 free of the monomer material, the positive electrode of the source 17 is connected with the counter electrode 16 and a current is applied to remove electrolyte ions from the polymer membrane 19. The holes freed from the ions are impregnated with a liquid crystal to obtain a polymer and liquid crystal composite membrane.
