Summary:PURPOSE:To prepare the subject fiber having excellent mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, etc., by spinning a silicon-containing polycyclic aromatic polymer composed of a specific carbonaceous material, crystalline carbon, etc., and a Si-C-O substance. CONSTITUTION:(A) 100 pts.wt. of one kind or more of crystal-oriented state carbonaceous materials selected from the group of radial structure, onion structure, random structure, etc., derived from polycyclic aromatic compounds of mesophase state, (B) 100 pts.wt. of crystalline or amorphous carbon of non- oriented state derived from optically isotropically polycyclic aromatic compounds containing organic solvent insolubles and (C) 0.015-200 pts.wt. of a Si-C-O substance of aggregates comprising an amorphous phase comprising Si, C and O, crystalline ultrafine particles having particle sizes of <=500Angstrom and comprising beta-SiC and amorphous SiOx (0<x<=2) and composed from 30-70wt.% of Si, 20-60wt.% of C and 0.5-10wt.% of O are compounded with each other in an A:B ratio of 1:0.0-4 to prepare a spinning raw solution, which is spun, converted into a non-meltable state and subsequently calcined to provide the objective fiber.
