Summary:PURPOSE:To stabilize the traveling of the title magnetic recording medium and to impart high mechanical strength to the medium by forming a magnetic layer on one surface of a nonmagnetic substrate, forming a metal oxide layer on the other surface, and forming an amorphous carbon layer on the metal oxide layer. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer 2 of a ferromagnetic metal thin film is provided on the front of the nonmagnetic substrate 1, the metal oxide layer 3 is furnished on the rear, and the amorphous carbon layer 4 is formed on the metal oxide layer 3. Namely, the mechanical strength of even the thin metal oxide layer 3 is high due to its hardness. Since the amorphous carbon layer 4 has low friction coefficient and electric resistance, static electricity generated in traveling is removed. As a result, the mechanical strength and traveling property are improved, and a stabilized reproduction output can be obtained.
