Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the subject resin having remarkably reduced rate of Br<-> elimination under boiling at high temperature by using an amino group- containing compound after the bromination of a novolak resin in the production of a brominated novolak resin to be used as a raw material. CONSTITUTION:A novolak resin of formula (R is H or methyl; n is 0-10 on an average) is brominated with bromine in the presence of an amino group- containing compound and/or the brominated reaction product is treated with an amino group-containing compound after bromination. The obtained brominated novolak resin is made to react with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali preferably at 40-80 deg.C to obtain the objective resin. The amino group-containing compound is e.g., hydrazine, methylamine or urea. The bromination reaction is carried out preferably at 10-50 deg.C.
