Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the subject carbon fiber having improved tensile strength in high efficiency by melt-spinning a carbonaceous meso-phase pitch, infusibilizing the spun fiber in a specific oxidizing atmosphere at a specific temperature and subjecting the product to carbonization treatment or graphitization treatment. CONSTITUTION:A pitch fiber is produced by the melt-spinning of a carbonaceous meso-phase pitch such as coal tar pitch or petroleum pitch. The pitch fiber is infusibilized by heating at 100-400 deg.C in an oxidizing atmosphere containing 0.1-40vol.% of nitrogen dioxide and 4-40vol.% of water. The infusibilized fiber is carbonized or graphitized at 1000-2000 deg.C in an atmosphere of an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon to obtain the objective carbon fiber.
