Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent an erroneous read even in case of the absence of a magnetic ink characteristics by measuring the interval between a character to be recognized and the character before it, and deciding on a failure in character recognition when the absence of the magnetic ink charcter is detected. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic reading head 18 scans relatively on a card which is fed at a constant speed to read magnetie ink characters. The read signal from the head 18 is passed through an amplifier 19 and an LPF20 and converted by an A/D converter 21 into a digital signal, which is stored in an RAM22 temporarily. A microprocessing unit 11 calculates the difference in the address of a peak between the character to be recognized this time and the character which is already recognized last time to detect the interval between both characters. When this interval is larger than a specific interval, it is decided that the character can not be recognized.
