Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain magnesium hydroxide particles suitable as a flame-retardant filler with dripping-preventive property for polyolefin resin by coating a magnesium hydroxide particle with a layer comprising silicate anhydride fine particles of specified BET specific surface area. CONSTITUTION:Magnesium hydroxide particles are added to a water dispersion of 0.5-5wt.% silicate anhydride fine particles having >=100m /g BET specific surface area. After stirring, the mixture liquid is filtered, washed with water and dried to obtain magnesium hydroxide particles coated with films of silicate anhydride fine powder with >=100m /g BET specific surface area. The obtd. magnesium hydroxide particles have such an effect that if they are burnt, the silicate fine particles in the coating film make bondings with magnesium oxide particles produced by combustion. By incorporating the magnesium hydroxide particles into polyolefin resin, the resin has improved flame-retardant property and reduced dripping property.
