Summary:PURPOSE:To permit an effective maintenance and continuance of an exothermic reaction by providing both an exothermic reaction detection means and an exothermic reaction initiating means operative in conjunction therewith for use in the application of current to a hydrogen occluding metal such as Pd, Ti, etc., as a cathode in a heavy water. CONSTITUTION:In a heavy water 30 with an anode and a cathode arranged therein, current is applied to a hydrogen occluding metal such as palladium titanium, etc., as the cathode to electrolyze this heavy water so as to produce an exothermic reaction. An exothermic device is provided therein with a reaction detection means 2 for sensing changes in the temp. of a reaction path and hence the occurrence of the exothermic reaction. Also provided is reaction initiating means 3 which starts the exothermic reaction by disrupting the normal state of the reaction path and imparting a chance for the exothermic reaction to take place, when the information from the reaction detection means senses the exothermic reaction as being in the state of stoppage. The device provided with these two means permit a more effective exothermic reaction. With respect to the waveform of the current to be applied, an pulse wave is more preferable than pulsating one.
