Summary:PURPOSE:To hold back molten metal from permeation, prevent impairment of the lining material, and extend the service life by introducing, for the lining of a furnace, refractory brick which singly absorbs expansion of a molten metal- processing vessel and in the lining structure of the furnace. CONSTITUTION:An expansion-absorbing coat 4 is formed on the surfaces of a refractory brick 1, except the side 2 facing the work and the backside 3, subsequent to the firing. To form the coat, a fired refractory brick 1 is immersed in a resin-in-solution 6 and, after adhesion of the resin in solution, dried. To form an expansion-absorbing coat consisting of the resin combined with a combustible material in the form of fine chips, a fired refractory brick 1 is immersed in the resin-in-solution 6 and, immediately after adhesion of the resin in solution to the surfaces of the brick, the resin is sprinkled with fine chips 5 of the combustible material and then set by drying; or in a liquid mixture of the resin-in-solution with a suitable quantity of a combustible material dispersed therein a fired refractory brick is immersed and, after adhesion of the liquid mixture, set by drying. These methods of forming an expansion- absorbing coat are generally applicable examples.
