Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a highly stereoregular olefin polymer in high yield at low cost by using a catalyst made up of a solid catalytic cmoponent containing Ti, Mg and halogen, an organoaluminum compound and an acetal compound of specific structure. CONSTITUTION:An olefin is polymerized in the presence of a catalyst made up of (A) a solid catalytic component containing Ti, Mg and halogen, (B) an organoaluminum compound (pref. triethylaluminum) and (C) an acetal compound of the formula (R and R are each hydrocarbon residue; R - R are H, or hydrocarbon, etc.) (e.g. 5,5-dimethoxy-1,3-cyclopentadiene). It is preferable that the Mg compound, Ti compound and halogen each constituting the component A to be magnesium chloride, TiCl4 etc. and chlorine, respectively. The polymerization temperature is pref. at 20 - 130 deg.C.
