Summary:PURPOSE:To reduce the driving loss of an oil pump and to make an automatic transmission compact by engaging a lockup clutch with the line pressure, and releasing it with the secondary pressure by an overraised pressure at a line pressure regulating device. CONSTITUTION:The oil pressure from the oil pump 109 of an oil pressure generator 118 is regulated by the regulator valve 152 of a line pressure regulating device 110 into a specific line pressure, and the excessive oil is exhausted to an oil passage b as a secondary pressure. When a lockup clutch is engaged at the D range, the SOL. NO.3 of a starting control device 112 is duty-controlled to the increasing side, the line pressure operating to an oil passage 3 through a speed selecting device 115 from an oil passage 1 is led in to a fluid coupling F/C through a lockup control valve 156 and an oil passage j, and the lockup clutch CL is engaged, on the other hand, in the N and P ranges, only the secondary pressure operates to the F/C through the oil passage b by a manual valve 159, and the clutch CL is released. In such a way, a compact size of oil pump can be used.
