Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain the high-quality image which is free from the generation of the dotty fogging by the nonuniformity of an electrostatic charge, the image defect by the discharge dielectric breakdown of a photosensitive body, etc., by incorporating a vinyl pyridine resin into the surface layer. CONSTITUTION:The electrostatic charging member 1 is formed by laminating a base layer 3 and the surface layer 4 in this order on a conductive base body 2. The conductive base body 2 constitutes the central shaft of the charging member 1 and is formed by using metals, such as iron, copper, stainless steel, aluminum, and aluminum alloys or conductive resins, etc. The surface layer 4 contains the vinyl pyridine resin. The vinyl pyridine resin is exemplified by poly-2-vinyl pyridine, poly-3-vinyl pyridine, poly-4-vinyl pyridine, etc. Copolymers of the monomers thereof and other kinds of monomers are usable as well. The volume resistivity is adjusted by incorporating the vinyl pyridine resin into the surface layer 4 in such a manner. The generation of a voltage drop by the flow of an excessive current in the case of the presence of the defect, such as dielectric breakdown, in the electrophotographic sensitive body is thereby decreased.
