Summary:PURPOSE:To shorten the smelting time of a metallic material and unify the temperature distribution of molten metal by a method wherein a DC voltage is impressed between a furnace top electrode and a furnace bottom electrode while conducting one piece or more than two pieces of coiled conductors selected by operating a changeover switch. CONSTITUTION:The terminals 71-74 of coiled conductors 51-54 are arranged on a semi-circle about the terminal 75 of a DC power source 31 on a changeover switch 61. When metallic material is charged into an arc furnace 21 and the changeover switch 61 is rotated reciprocally along the semi-circle by energizing the DC power source 31, connected contact is changed continuously and conducted coiled conductor is changed continuously while repeating the cycle of coiled conductor 54 coiled conductors 54, 54 coiled conductor 53... coiled conductor 51 coiled conductors 51, 52 coiled conductor 52... coiled conductor 54 whereby the direction of arc, generated between a furnace top electrode 11 and a furnace bottom electrode 41, is changed continuously by the electromagnetic force of a magnetic field formed in accordance with the repetition.
