Summary:PURPOSE:To advantageously provide the subject compound useful as a flame retardant for synthetic resins without producing any by-product by adding a specific amount of an organic solvent insoluble in water and not relating to a bromination reaction to the reaction system when bisphenol A is brominated in methanol solvent. CONSTITUTION:Bisphenol A is brominated in methanol solvent mixed with an organic solvent insoluble in water and not relating to the bromination reaction in an amount of 1-8%, preferably 3-5%, based on the methanol to provide the objective compound. Although any one of solvents insoluble in water, not relating to the bromination reaction but capable of dissolving the produced brominated bisphenols can be used as the above-mentioned solvent, chlorobenzene, benzene, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, etc., are especially excellent.
