Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the brightness and the focus characteristics of a display device by applying a magnetic field in the depth direction of a multiplier so as to increase substantially the current amplification factor of the multiplier without increasing of the number of layers of the multiplier and of the applied voltage and at the same time to suppress the divergence of the electron beam emitted from the multiplier. CONSTITUTION:A two dimensionally spread electron beam (sheet-shaped beam) is generated with a line electron source 2, and the amplification of the electron beam is carried out with a multiplier 200. Here, in order to improve the amplification efficiency and the convergence of the electron beam, a magnetic field is applied in the depth direction of the multiplier 200. Thereby electrons incident to the multiplier play Larmor motion and the number of collisions of electrons to the side wall of apertures 21 provided in the multiplier 200 is increased to enlarge the amplification factor of the beam. And the divergence of the electron beam emitted from the multiplier 200 is suppressed simultaneously. The divergence of the electron beam amplified by the multiplier 200 is suppressed by the magnetic field, and high density electron beams can be landed on the desired portions of the fluorescent screen 7.
