Summary:PURPOSE:To make it possible to prevent secondary failures of an automatic transmission with rapid detection of the failed condition by judging the automatic transmission to be failed if a vehicle does not start moving in spite of the vehicle condion being ready for starting. CONSTITUTION:A control unit 300 detects that a signal from a position selection switch 304 is showing a range other than P and N, an idling switch 306 is off, a foot brake switch 307 is off, and a parking brake switch 308 is off. When a condition in which the vehicle speed is lower than a low value V0 continues for a specified period of time, the condition is determined to be failure and a signal outputted to a line pressure solenoid 44 is changed to a line pressure lowering side. This causes the line pressure to be a very low value and an automatic transmission comes to a neutral condition. As a result, secondary failures of the clutch, brake, etc. are prevented.
