PURPOSE:To obtain the black-and-white liquid crystal element of good quality by using a color filter which is in complementary relation with a display color in the light state of the liquid crystal element when a color filter is not laminated. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal cell 1 where a phase plate 2 is laminated is sandwiched between polarizing plates 3 and 3. Further, the color filter 5 is laminated thereupon. The color filter 5 is laminated on the side opposite the phase plate 2 across the liquid crystal cell 1 and a fluorescent lamp 4 as a light source is arranged on the side where the color filter 5 is laminated. The color filter 5 which is in complementary color relation is laminated as the color filter, so the wavelength dependency of transmitted light is flattened to make a sharper black-and-white display. Consequently, the polymer phase plate type liquid crystal element of good black-and-white display quality which is manufactured at low cost is obtained.
