Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a long term stability of a radioactive waste by sealing a buffer material into a space between a pit inner wall and an outside part of a pipe arranged on the buffer material being placed on a bottom part of a pit, and into an upper space of an overpacked container being housed in the pit. CONSTITUTION:A pipe 9 is placed in a groove of a bottom buffer material 7 of a pit 6, so as to be able to house an overpacked container 4 which contains a radioactive waste, a formed outer buffer material 10 is arranged and filled into an outside part of the pipe 9, and remaining interspaces are filled and sealed with a powder buffer material. Then, after the containers 4 are inserted into an inside part of the pipe 9 and properly arranged, plugs 11 and 12 made of the buffer material, are arranged on an upper part of the container 4 to seal up a whole structure completely. By following these procedures, the whole structure of the pit is completely sealed up by the buffer material and therefore the container 4 containing the radioactive waste can be safely stored under the ground for a long time. Moreover, as the buffer material is previously molded for formation or is processed at the construction site, fabrication works are simple and safe, while the molding work of the buffer material and also an insertion work of the container 4 into the pit are facilitated by the existence of the pipe.
