PURPOSE:To operate with multilevel image data and a binary image signal by providing multilevel image data input means, means for generating a gradation set signal responsive to multilevel image data, binary image signal input means, and means for alternately selecting the gradation set signal and a binary image signal. CONSTITUTION:When an input selection signal 109 is a logic '1' level, a binary input image signal is selected, and a signal 110 directly drives a driving circuit 7 through an AND gate 13 and an OR gate 12. When the signal 109 is a logic '0' level, multilevel input image data 100 is selected, and the output of a comparator 6 drives the circuit 7 through an AND gate 14 and the OR gate 12. The signal 109 is sent from a host system. The system sets the signal 109 to the logic '0' level in a range for multilevel printing, for example, photographic image, etc. to send the data 100 and sets the signal 109 to the logic '1' level in a range for binary printing a character, graphic, etc. to send a signal 110.
