Summary:PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the subject compound useful as the synthetic raw material for medicines and pesticides with an economical advantage by acting a specified microorganism on R-diols or a mixture of R- and S-diols. CONSTITUTION:On an (R)-1,2-diol having a steric configuration of formula I (R is alkyl, alkenyl, etc.) or a mixture of the compound of formula I and an (S)-1,2-diol represented by formula II having the opposite steric configuration to formula I, an microorganism having a function of selective metabolization of the compound expressed by formula I and/or a function of steric-configuration inversion of formula I to that of the compound of formula II is acted to obtain the objective compound of formula II. In addition, Arthroascus.japanensis IFO 1848, etc., is exemplified as the above-mentioned microorganism.
