Summary:PURPOSE:To provide a press roll so designed that holes for passing cooling liquid are provided in a metallic center shaft supporting a non-metallic roll shell and a cooling operation is made to reduce thermal expansion of the center shaft and prevent the non-metallic roll shell from failure. CONSTITUTION:In such a press roll that a metallic center shaft 3 is penetrated at the center of a non-metallic roll shell 1 made of granite, ceramics, glass, etc., and compressive force is applied, through a roll head 2, on the roll shell 2 at its both ends, penetration holes 7 for a coolant are provided within said center shaft 3 and the coolant is passed through these holes to prevent the center shaft 3 from thermal expansion.
