PURPOSE:To facilitate the correction of characters after the documents are prepared by retrieving the KANJI (Chinese characters) included in a designated character code set and satisfying the application level out of the character strings of the prepared documents and showing these KANJI on a display screen. CONSTITUTION:A character string including KANJI inputted via an input part 1 and stored in a document memory part 2 is displayed on a display part 3. When the code information on the educational KANJI, etc., is designated out of the character code information parts 6 which are controlled by a decided character code control part 5, a character code deciding part 8 takes the character codes out of the part 2 for each character and compares them with the designated character code information 6. If no coincidence is obtained from said comparison, the comparison is carried out at the part 3 for character codes equivalent to a display enable screen. At the same time, the application level information are previously stored in the application level information parts 7. Thus the levels of KANJI usable with each designated application level can be separated from the unusable KANJI. Thus the correction of characters can be facilitated.
