Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester having excellent hue and high degree of polymerization in a short time by reacting an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component with an alkylene glycol component by using a specific niobic acid as a polycondensation catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic dicarboxylic acid component (preferably terephthalic acid) is reacted with an alkylene glycol component (e.g. ethylene glycol) by using a niobic acid obtained by heat-treating a nitrogen atom- containing hydrated niobium compound (preferably one obtained by treating a niobium halide with an alkali aqueous solution containing 10-40mol% based on total alkali components of ammonium hydroxide) as a polycondensation catalyst at 80-400 deg.C to give the aimed polyester.
