PURPOSE:To make a picture measuring instrument operable for a practically sufficient time by means of a battery incorporated to a miniature camera only by constituting a miniature camera in such a way that the camera is actuated by means of a request signal from a highorder processor or a timer device during the period of sending picture signals of a prescribed picture number only. CONSTITUTION:A high order processor 1 transmits optical signals (request signals) from its built-in control section 14 to the light transmitting/receiving section 22 of a miniature camera 2 through its light transmitting/receiving section 13 and an optical fiber cable 61 at regular time intervals. The request signals are detected by the section 22. Upon detecting the signals, a control section 24 supplies electric power from a battery 23 to a camera drive circuit in a camera head 21 and the transmitting section of the section 22 and converts the picture signals obtained by an image pickup element in the camera head 21 into optical signals at the section 22 by a previously set picture number. Then the circuit 24 disconnects the power supply from the battery 23 to the transmitting section of the light transmitting/receiving section 22 and camera driving circuit in the camera head 21 until the next request signal is received after transmitting the optical signals (video signals) to the processor 1 through an optical fiber cable 62.
