Summary:PURPOSE:To efficiently apply bleaching by oxygen to a lignocellulose substance without lowering viscosity of pulp using an alkaline water solution containing sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide at a specific concentration. CONSTITUTION:An alkali water solution obtained by controlling weight ratio (calculated in terms of Na2O) of sodium sulfide concentration to sodium hydroxide concentration to <=0.02 is subjected to air or oxidation treatment using a fixed bed reactor packing a granular active carbon catalyst wherein pore volume of active carbon having >=100Angstrom pore size is >=0.25cc/g and contains >=35% above-mentioned pore volume based on total pore volume. Bleaching by oxygen is applied to a lignocellulose substance using the resultant alkali water solution.
