PURPOSE:To obtain a detergent composition free from irritation and irritant smell when applied to scalp or skin and giving excellent refreshing feeling lasting over a long period, by compounding a surfactant with specific amounts of 3-l-menthoxybutyric acid ester and l-menthol, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition can be produced by compounding (A) 5-30wt.% (based on the whole composition) of one or more surfactants selected from the compound salts of formula I [R1 is 8-18C saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group; M1 is alkali metal ion, ammonium ion or alkanolamine group; M2 is H or M1; l is 0-20] or formula II (R2, R3=R1; m, n=l), the compound salts of formula III (R4 and R5 are 9-15C saturated alkyl; p is 3-13; M3, M4=M2) and higher fatty acid salts of formula IV (R6 is 7-17C saturated or unsaturated alkyl; M5=M2), (B) 0.01-2.0wt.% of 3-l-menthoxybutyric acid ester of formula V and (C) 0.01-2.0wt.% of l-and/or dl-menthol. The composition is used for the cleaning of hair and skin.
