PURPOSE:To retrieve a character string with designation of character attributes by providing a table storing the information on the character types and character attributes and comparing the characters in a document with the contents of said table. CONSTITUTION:When the attribute retrieval is selected by a mouse 1a out of a retrieval menu displayed on the screen of a display part 5, an attribute retrieval form is displayed. The retrieval information on an inputted retrieval range 23, character types 24, character attributes 25 etc., are stored in a retrieval information memory part 2 by reference to the displayed attribute retrieval form and with operation of the mouse 1a. A retrieval processing part 3 checks the types 24 or the attributes 25 for each character read out of a document file 4 and judges the coincidence or discordance with the retrieval information to perform the attribute retrieving process. When the coincidence is obtained with the retrieval information, the character to be retrieved is displayed on the screen of the part 5 with inversion or in a color, etc., for discrimination from other characters.
