Summary:PURPOSE: To efficiently display a pattern with electrodes in a small area by providing three electrodes, forming the pattern in any specified liquid crystal area and contributing all the electrode areas to the display of the pattern. CONSTITUTION: Transparent glass boards 4 and 5 are provided, an electrode 1, insulated layer 61, electrode 2 and alignment film 63 are successively formed on the counter face of the board 4, and an electrode 3 is formed on the counter face of the board 5. Then, a liquid crystal cell is formed by sealing liquid crystal L between the boards 4 and 5. The electrodes 1 and 3 are respectively formed circular and rectangular in coincidence with the 1st or 2nd pattern. Besides, the electrode 2 is made coincident with a form for which the 1st pattern is removed from the 2nd pattern. The electrodes 1 and 2 are connected through a lead electrode to a voltage impression circuit. In this case, when an AC voltage is impressed to the electrode 1, the 1st pattern is displayed and when the AC voltage is impressed to the electrode 2, the 2nd pattern is displayed. Thus, while using the electrodes in the small area, the patterns can be efficiently displayed while including one pattern into the other pattern.
