Summary:NEW MATERIAL:1-Hydroxyethylbenzenes of formula I (n is 3 or 4; Y is NR R or group of formula II; R -R are alkyl; X<-> is halogen ion) or their pharmacologically allowable salts. EXAMPLE:2-[2-(Ethylheptylamino)-1-hydroxyethyl]indane. USE:An antiarrhythmic agent useful as a remedy and preventive for ischemic cardiopathy, myocardial infarction, stenocardia, myocardosis, valvular disease, hypertensive cardiopathy, cardiac insufficiency, etc., causing or possible to cause arrhythmia. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced either by adding an amine of formula NHR R to a compound of formula III by nucleophilic addition reaction and reducing the carbonyl group of the reaction product or thermally refluxing a compound of formula IV and a compound of formula R X (X is halogen) in an inert solvent such as acetonitrile for about 1-4 days.
