PURPOSE:To simplify the structure of a grooving grinder by providing a device for rotationally indexing a spindle around a horizontal axis orthogonal to the rotating axis of a grinder wheel, on a spindle bed, and by providing an oscillation preventing device for supporting a workpiece at its bottom by means of a collet chuck, on a table. CONSTITUTION:A hydraulic cylinder device 40 on a table 22 causes an oscillation preventing device 46 to abut against the lower surface of a collet chuck 27 which is provided at the forward end of a spindle 25 and which grips a workpiece W. In this condition, a grinder wheel 18 is moved vertically relative to the workpiece W and is also moved horizontally in the direction of the rotating axis of the spindle so as to machine a groove Wa in the outer periphery of the workpiece W. The oscillation preventing device 46 is lowered, and after the spindle 25 is indexed to a predetermined angular position by means of a rotationally indexing device, the oscillation preventing device 46 is made to abut again against the lower surface of the collet chuck 27. In this condition, the grinder wheel 18 is moved vertically relative to the workpiece W, and is also moved horizontally in the direction of the rotating axis of the spindle 25 so as to carry out a grooving process at different positions on the workpiece W.
