Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain an optical recording medium having excellent recording and reproduction characteristics and being free of deterioration of the characteristics with time under hot and humid conditions, by using a recording layer comprising a cyclopropane derivative having three aromatic quinoid groups bonded to a cyclopropane ring. CONSTITUTION:An optical recording medium comprises basically a substrate and a recording layer comprising a cyclopropane derivative, the derivative having three aromatic quinoid groups linked to a cyclopropane ring by carbon- carbon double bonds. The aromatic quinoid group may be a substd. or unsubstd. benzoquinoid group, naphthoquinoid group, anthraquinoid group or the like. The optical recording medium has a high light absorbance of 30-50% and a high reflectance of 20-40% for semiconductor laser light with a wavelength of 700-900 nm, and therefore has an extremely high sensitivity for recording and reproduction, and has extremely favorable time stability of recording and reproduction characteristics under such environmental conditions that heat, moisture, light or the like is applied to the medium.
