To make it possible to detect a subject's body motion at the time of X-ray photography to implement at least one of reduction in unnecessary exposure of the subject and improvement of throughput.SOLUTION: A mammography apparatus according to an embodiment comprises an X-ray tube, an X-ray detector, a photography platform, a compression plate, and contact detection parts. The X-ray tube generates an X-ray. The X-ray detector detects the X-ray generated by the X-ray tube. On the photography platform is placed the subject's mamma. The compression plate is provided so as to face the photography platform and compress the subject's mamma placed on the photography platform between the compression plate and the photography platform. The contact detection parts are arranged in a direction of a width of at least one of the photography platform and the compression plate, in which the subject's chest wall is to come into contact with the at least one, to detect contact of the chest wall.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
