Summary:PURPOSE:To enhance the cycle characteristic of a battery by suppressing initiation of cracks at the Li/Al grain boundary in a neg. electrode. CONSTITUTION:A neg. electrode is made of an alloy represented by lithium- aluminum-X-Y, where X is either Mn or Cr, and Y is one of the group consisting of Be, Bi, Cd, Ge, Pb, Sn, and Tl. The alloy of X, Y metals with aluminum will have the metal structure of an eutectic or a peritectic type alloy. If this alloy and lithium are turned into one alloy, therefore, the X and Y metals will exist at the grain boundary, so that crack initiations in this part will be suppressed. This turns the neg. electrode active substance into particulate and prevents deterioration of the cycle characteristic.
