PURPOSE:To obtain a picture with high quality balanced between channels by feeding back a signal to a sampling circuit so that a difference between channels at a DC voltage level of an output signal in an area corresponding to a photoelectric conversion element group covered with a light shield is decreased. CONSTITUTION:A signal charge subjected to photoelectric conversion at an image pickup area 10 is transferred vertically and shared in horizontal shift registers 11, 12 while a transfer electrode is inserted in between at every other picture element. The signal charge is transferred to the registers while the phases are shifted by 180 deg. and the signal is inputted to sampling circuits 15, 16 via amplifiers 13, 14 and sampled. Gate circuits 17, 18 are set alternately for each picture element period and the output signals are mixed in a mixture circuit 19 and converted into a consecutive signal. Then the result is outputted to a process circuit and also to a gate circuit 20 and an inter-channel DC level difference detector 21, feedback is applied to the sampling circuit 16 to keep the balance between channels and to obtain a picture with high quality.
