Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the picture quality by applying color masking processing to a data in which multi-value processing is differentiated to a major color and other color. CONSTITUTION:The device is provided with line buffers 1-3, multi-value processing sections 4-6, multi-value circuits 21-23, and masking arithmetic sections 7-9 and when masking processing is applied to an n-value picture such as binary or ternary picture, a picture data not smoothed is used as a major color for the arithmetic operation and a smoothed data is used as a sub color to apply calculation. In other words, a data with differentiated multi-value processing for major color and other color is used. Thus, the masking processing is applied without losing edge information to n-value processing while reproducing dot position with fidelity and the picture quality is improved.
