Summary:PURPOSE:To enable long-time storage in a stable condition by a method wherein a spent fuel rod is sealed up as loaded into a loading hole of a glass layer in a canister to be loaded into a housing pipe in a cell chamber and the canister is cooled with the passage of air near the housing pipe. CONSTITUTION:A fuel rod X disassembled is loaded into a loading hole (g) of a basket B inside a canister Y and the canister Y is sealed up. A container Z for storage is conveyed to a storage to be loaded into a housing pipe 6 in a cell chamber 1 in a multiple lamination and a shielding lid 15 seals up the cell chamber 1. In this case, as an internal space of the canister Y is filled with a glass layer (f), heat capacity of this part increases to reduce effect on the fuel rod X inside as caused by passage of air and a change in temperature in the perimeter of the canister Y and the housing pipe 6. The interposing of the glass layer (f) allows the upgrading of heat conductivity inside the canister Y to promote cooling thereby achieving storage with the removal of a decay heat being released from the fuel rod X.
