Summary:PURPOSE:To obtain a sintered compact having excellent mechanical strength, thermal shock resistance and high-temperature resistance stability, by constituting the sintered compact containing a specific amount of B4C and a matrix substance of oxide. CONSTITUTION:A sintered compact comprises <=62vol.% B4C and a matrix substance containing one or more oxides of Al, Si and element (e.g., Be, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba) of group 2A of the periodic table. Further the sintered compact is optionally incorporated with <=56vol.% SiC.
