To solve the problem in which damaged washpipe seals can cause leakage of drilling fluids, which is common in many drilling rigs, and can cause contamination and destruction of surrounding components and the environment.SOLUTION: In a wash pipe seal and method, a first sliding mechanical face seal is provided between two sealing elements to seal a mud pipe. A second mechanical face seal is provided between two additional sealing elements to define a cavity within a housing of the washpipe between first and second mechanical face seals, independent of the mud pipe.
