Summary:To provide a transition metal-containing composite hydroxide that is a precursor of a positive electrode active material for a secondary battery capable of further improving output characteristics while maintaining capacity characteristics and cycle characteristics equivalent to those of a positive electrode active material with a solid structure.SOLUTION: A transition metal-containing composite hydroxide comprises at least one low-density layer consisting of secondary particles formed by agglomeration of plate-like primary particles and formed by agglomeration of fine primary particles having a particle size smaller than that of the plate-like primary particles within a range of up to 30% relative to the particle size of the secondary particles from a surface of the secondary particles among the secondary particles, an average ratio of a thickness of the at least one low-density layer relative to the particle size of the secondary particles is in a range of 3% to 15%, and no gentle density gradient is formed between a portion formed by agglomeration of the plate-like primary particles and the low-density layer.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 【課題】中実構造の正極活物質と同様の容量特性およびサイクル特性を維持しつつ、出力特性をさらに向上させることができる二次電池用正極活物質の前駆体である遷移金属含有複合水酸化物を提供する。【解決手段】板状一次粒子が凝集して形成された二次粒子からなり、かつ、二次粒子のうちの二次粒子の表面より二次粒子の粒径に対して30%までの範囲に、前記板状一次粒子よりも小さな粒径を有する微細一次粒子が凝集して形成された少なくとも1層の低密度層を備え、少なくとも1層の低密度層の厚さの前記二次粒子の粒径に対する平均比率は、3%~15%の範囲にあり、かつ、板状一次粒子が凝集することにより形成された部分と、前記低密度層との間に、緩やかな密度勾配が形成されていないことを特徴とする、遷移金属含有複合水酸化物とする。【選択図】図1
