Summary:To provide an active waveguide that includes an active rod and a passive rod having respective polymer claddings mechanically and optically coupled to each other to define a side-pump mode.SOLUTION: One or more elements embedded in one or both of active and passive rods have a refractive index that is at least 1*10-3 lower than the lowest refractive index of the respective active and passive rods. A MM core of the active rod includes a concentric inner region and an outer region, luminescent material concentration in the outer region is less than 50% of the luminescent material concentration in the inner region, and a radius of the inner region is at most 92% of the radius of the outer region.
