Summary: | To provide a laminate excellent in both peelability and liquid crystal alignment of a base material, an optical film, a polarizing plate, and an image display device.SOLUTION: A laminate has a first base material, and a first retardation layer provided adjacent to the first base material. The first base material is a temporary support for transfer. The first retardation layer is a layer obtained by fixing a liquid crystal compound that contains a polymer not having a photo-alignment group and is horizontally aligned. When the secondary ion intensity of the polymer in the first retardation layer is measured by a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry while irradiating, with an ion beam, from a surface of the first retardation layer facing the first base material toward a surface on the opposite side of the first base material, an average value IB1 of the secondary ion intensity derived from the polymer in a base material-side surface layer area is larger than an average value IA1 of the secondary ion intensity derived from the polymer in an air-side surface layer area.SELECTED DRAWING: None
