To provide an image generation device and image generation method that can generate a three-dimensional image.SOLUTION: An image generation device includes a light conversion element capable of forming a plurality of mask patterns having two-dimensional shapes different from each other. The light conversion element is configured to be capable of converting observation light input from a light source into a plurality of pieces of conversion light corresponding to each of the plurality of mask patterns and outputting the light. The image generation device includes an image sensor to which the plurality of pieces of conversion light is input. The image sensor is configured to be capable of acquiring a plurality of two-dimensional images corresponding to the plurality of pieces of conversion light.
